Raf Simons crewneck from AW1997, which is Raf's first runway show and considered his industry debut since he first began presenting collections through video in 1995. The collection was inspired by American college students and English schoolboys, and the presentation took place in a defunct discotheque filled with old cinema chairs. The models were completely street-cast and some are still a part of Raf's team today.

The crewneck is inspired by short-sleeve collegiate raglan sweatshirts, which were popular from the 50's through 70's. I can't say for sure, but I came across a vintage UC Davis sweatshirt (pictured) which could have been Raf's original reference, which has a very similar color scheme, logo, as well as raw seams on the sleeve. The crewneck is constructed from a cotton/poly/lycra blend and gives the illusion of raw seams on the sleeve and hem, though in close-ups you will see they are actually finished.

"The School Boy collection was about my own past but also my interest in English youth culture. It was a mixture of what I had when growing up with a Catholic education, and what I wasn’t allowed to listen to. I think you go back to these things because that’s the only way you can bury them.
